Day 4 and 5

Yesterday we had a long day starting with an 12pm game against Latvia who were last year relegated from the A division. We started out really well, playing nearly 100% and stealing a one in the first end.

We then exchanged ones with the hammer with both skips getting their teams out of sticky situations with two super button draws. Then, having to draw against two and then three, Anna’s draws hit a frosty patch of ice and came up short giving Latvia a draw for a four before the half time break.

We got into a bit of bother in the sixth end and lost another four. Very frustrating as we had been playing so well up to that point. With the score at 9-2, we decided to keep plugging away and see if we could get a few points on the board. We dragged the score back to 9-6 and had a shot in the 10th end to lie three before the Latvian skip played. Unfortunately the task was just too big and we couldn’t quite get that extra end. It was a great fight back though and showed that we could play great curling even after a few bad ends.

A really disappointing loss for us – I think on another day, that game would be ours!

In the 8pm game, we played the Netherlands. We had a close game against this team last year and know they can be a tough team – not to be underestimated. Luckily, we got off to a good start and were 4-0 up after four ends.

We kept our good play up and kept leaving the skip, Marianne, with tough shots. We won the game in eight ends 9-2.

This morning, we had a little bit of a lie in and a good breakfast before our game against Austria.

Nutritious and delicious

This is a country we are very familiar with after playing them (and winning) three times in 2013! We won the draw shot challenge with Hetty covering the pin and Anna just in the four foot behind the button. We’ve really been concentrating on our draw shot after being knocked out on this last year, and are currently top!

Again, we got off to a great start, scoring a three with the hammer in the first end and a steal of two in the second. Despite some scrappy play and a few struggles with the ice, we were off after eight ends with a 9-4 victory.

We now sit on four wins and three losses. This means we still have a chance of a playoff place if we win the remainder of our games and keep our draw shot ahead of the rest.

Watching the A group in between games!

Tonight we play C Group promoted team, France – a team we’ve never played in women’s (but a couple of familiar faces from juniors). Wish us luck and debrief on the game here tomorrow!!
